Q: Who are Canadian independent recording artists?
-
A: Independent artists represent over 95% of the musicians in the Canadian music industry. Less than 5% of Canadian musicians are signed to recording contracts, therefore all other musicians are, by definition, independent.
Collectively, we have a powerful reach into every Canadian neighborhood from coast to coast. We play on hundreds of stages every week across Canada. We have tens of thousands of web sites. We have fan clubs and connect directly with our communities on a daily basis.
Chances are every Canadian knows an independent artist.
-
Q: What does it mean to be independent?
-
A: Being independent means being autonomous.
Independent artists are at the center of their worlds. They are the masters of their destinies. They write, record and perform music that they choose, without interference from an outside power.
Being successful independently means building a great team around a great idea.
-
Q: What kind of music do independent artists play?
- A: Indie artists represent all forms of music: pop, rock, hip hop, jazz, country, classical, punk, new age, adult contemporary, metal, dance, folk, etc... All music that is not supported (owned) by a record company is independent, and that exists in all genres.
-
Q: Aren't there other music industry associations already?
-
A: Yes, but none that represent independent musicians exclusively. Record companies have always been well represented, but independent artists have not.
